Tiznit is the silver capital of southern Morocco. Behind its ochre walls, jewellers sell Amazigh (Berber) bracelets, fibulas and pendants, and the medina is calm enough to explore at your own pace. It is an easy half-day from our villas on Tamelalt Beach.
The silver souk
The jewellers' souk is a cluster of workshops and shops near the main square. Look for heavy cuffs, fibulas used to fasten traditional dress, enamelled pendants and the Tiznit cross. Some pieces are made in the workshops behind the counter; others come from across the region.
Quality varies a lot. Ask whether pieces are sterling silver, compare a few shops before buying, and expect to bargain politely. Genuinely old pieces are rare and priced accordingly.
The walled medina
Tiznit was founded in the late 19th century, and around 5 km of ochre walls with monumental gates still enclose the old town. Inside, the lanes are quiet and easy to navigate.
Look for the Grand Mosque, whose minaret bristles with wooden poles, and the Source Bleue spring, tied to the legend of the town's founding. The main square is a good place for a mint tea.
Beyond silver
Around the souk you'll find leather, spices, argan oil, olives and the everyday markets of a regional town. Small restaurants serve tagines, grilled meat and fresh juice at local prices.
Back to the coast
Most guests spend the morning in Tiznit and the afternoon by the sea: Aglou beach is 15 km away, and our Tamelalt villas about 25 minutes.
