Souss-Massa National Park protects a long strip of coast, dunes and river estuaries between Agadir and Tiznit. It is one of the best places in Morocco for birdwatching and one of the last strongholds of the wild northern bald ibis. From our Tamelalt villas, the Massa estuary makes a peaceful day out.
The Massa estuary
Where the Oued Massa meets the ocean, reed beds, lagoons and dunes attract herons, waders, flamingos at times and many migrating species. Tracks along the river let you walk and watch quietly; early morning is the most rewarding time.
Local guides around the park know where the birds are feeding on a given day and can make a big difference to the visit.
The northern bald ibis
The northern bald ibis is one of the world's rarest birds, and most of its wild population lives on this stretch of Moroccan coast. Seeing a flock feeding on the coastal steppe is a highlight for birdwatchers; a local guide gives you the best chance.
Getting there and planning
Drive north past Tiznit towards Agadir, then follow the signs towards Massa and the coast. Allow about an hour and a quarter from our Tamelalt villas. Bring water and snacks, as services in the park are limited, and wear neutral colours.
Combine the trip with lunch in Tiznit or Aglou on the way back.
