From Aglou's forgiving beach break to the reefs and points around Mirleft, a spot-by-spot guide to surfing Morocco's quiet southern coast.
North of Agadir, Morocco's famous breaks are busy for much of the year. Drive two hours south and you reach a coastline with the same Atlantic swell and a fraction of the surfers. Surfing in Mirleft means sandy coves for learning, rocky points for experienced surfers, and a good chance of sharing the peak with only a few people. Here's where to go.
Aglou: the beginner beach break
Aglou has a long sandy beach about 15 km from Tiznit, with several peaks that move with the sand banks. On small and medium days it's one of the easiest places on this coast to learn, with soft white water and plenty of room. Surf schools in the village rent boards and wetsuits. On bigger days the waves get heavier and the currents stronger.
Aftas: the friendly cove
In Mirleft itself, Aftas is a wide bay protected by rocky headlands. It often holds small, friendly waves when the open beaches are messy, which makes it a favourite with schools and longboarders. It's also the best place to swim when the surf is flat.
Mirleft's points and reefs
Around town, the rocky points and reefs come alive on bigger swells and suit experienced surfers. They can be excellent, but rocks are never far away: watch several sets before you paddle out, find out where the reef is and how the tide changes the wave, and never surf alone. Local surf shops know which spot is working on the day.
Towards Sidi Ifni
Further south, the coves between Mirleft and Legzira and the beach at Sidi Ifni can also hold waves. They're more exposed and less frequented: go with someone who knows them, or combine a surf check with a day trip to Legzira.
When to surf, and what to bring
Season: October to April brings the most consistent swell; summer is smaller and better for beginners.
Water temperature: roughly 17 to 22°C. A 3/2 mm wetsuit in winter, a shorty or 2 mm in summer.
Tides: many spots only work at certain tides. Ask locally or use a tide app.
Wind: mornings are often cleanest, before the afternoon sea breeze picks up.
