Imin Turga, Aftas, Marabout and the wild coves beyond: our local guide to the best beaches in Mirleft, and how to enjoy each one.
Mirleft is not one long beach but a string of sandy coves tucked between red and ochre headlands. Each Mirleft beach has its own personality: one has cafés and fishing boats, another is a wide sheltered bay for swimming and surf lessons, and a few further south are wild enough that you may have them to yourself. Here is how to choose.
Imin Turga: the town beach
Plage Imin Turga sits just below the town and is the easiest to reach, with a handful of cafés and simple restaurants above the sand. It's the beach for a lazy morning, a grilled-fish lunch and an early-evening stroll when the cliffs start to glow. In summer it's the liveliest of the coves.
Aftas: the sheltered bay
A little to the south, Aftas beach is a wide, curved bay protected by rocky points. On calm days it's the most comfortable place to swim, and on small swell it's a favourite with surf schools teaching beginners. Arrive early in high season if you want to park close to the sand.
Marabout beach and its white shrine
Marabout beach is named after the small white shrine perched on its rocks, one of the most photographed views in Mirleft. Come at sunset: the sun drops straight into the Atlantic behind the shrine. The sand is beautiful, but the ocean here can be powerful, so swim only in calm conditions.
The wild coves to the south
Beyond Marabout, smaller coves continue towards Sidi Mohamed Ou Abdallah and, further on, the red cliffs of Legzira. Some are reached by tracks or short paths down the cliff. They're perfect for a picnic, a walk at low tide or simply sitting with a book and the sound of the waves. Bring water and shade: there are no facilities.
Tips for a perfect beach day in Mirleft
Check the tide. Many coves shrink at high tide and reveal rock pools and hidden passages at low tide.
Swim where others swim. The Atlantic has strong currents; stay away from rocks and river mouths.
Go early or late in summer. July and August are busiest; mornings and evenings are calmer and cooler.
Pack layers. Even on hot days, the sea breeze can be cool after sunset.
Want to explore on foot? Our guide to coastal walks around Mirleft links the coves by the cliff path, and our Mirleft accommodation guide covers everything else about the town.
Stay a few minutes from the coves
Our three Mirleft villas, Cliffside Haven, Infinity and Kasbah, are on the cliffs at the edge of town, about five minutes from the beaches, each with a private pool for the afternoons when the ocean is too wild. Check availability for your dates.
