Why Mirleft is perfect for paragliding
On most afternoons, the wind blows steadily from the ocean onto the cliffs. The cliff pushes that air upwards, creating lift along the whole coastline. Pilots call it ridge soaring: instead of a quick descent, you glide back and forth above the coves for a long, smooth and surprisingly calm flight.
How a tandem flight works
Briefing. The pilot explains the take-off, how to sit in the harness and the landing. It takes a few minutes.
Take-off. You walk or jog a few steps towards the cliff edge, and the wing lifts you gently off the ground.
The flight. Usually between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the wind. Some pilots let you hold the brakes for a moment.
Landing. Most landings are on the beach or back at the take-off, softly, on your feet or seated.
Best season and time of day
Flights are possible for much of the year, with autumn to spring the most popular season. The best conditions usually come in the afternoon, once the sea breeze has set in. Paragliding depends entirely on the wind, so schools decide on the day, sometimes just an hour before. Keep your schedule flexible and plan more than one possible day.
What to wear and bring
Closed shoes with good grip (no sandals).
Comfortable trousers and a windproof jacket: it is cooler in the air.
Sunglasses with a strap, and sun cream.
A phone or camera on a lanyard, or ask the pilot about a GoPro video.
Ask the school about weight limits and any medical conditions before you book. Children can often fly in tandem too, depending on the pilot and their weight.
