Galloping along an empty Atlantic beach at sunset is one of the most memorable things to do in Mirleft. Here is how to plan a horse ride, whatever your level.
Few experiences match riding along the Atlantic at low tide, with the sand stretching ahead and the sun sinking into the ocean. The long beaches between Aglou, Tamelalt and Mirleft are ideal for it: wide, firm sand, very few people and dunes and cliffs as a backdrop. Whether you've never sat on a horse or ride every week, horse riding in Mirleft is easy to arrange.
Where you ride
Most rides follow the beaches and the tracks behind them. Tamelalt Beach is long and open, perfect for a steady walk or, for confident riders, a canter on the hard sand at low tide. Around Mirleft, routes combine cliff-top tracks with the coves below. Longer rides can head inland through argan trees and small Amazigh villages.
Rides for every level
Beginners and children: a calm walk along the beach, often led on foot by a guide. An hour is plenty for a first time.
Intermediate riders: a mix of walk and trot on the sand and the tracks, usually one to two hours.
Experienced riders: longer rides with canters on the beach when the tide and the guide allow it.
Tell the stable your level honestly: they will match you with the right horse and the right route.
The best time for a beach ride
Late afternoon into sunset is the magic hour: the light turns golden, the air is cooler and the beach is quiet. Low tide gives you the most space and the firmest sand. In summer, avoid the middle of the day; from October to May you can ride almost any time.
What to wear
Long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel, or trainers at least.
A hat or helmet (ask whether helmets are provided), sun cream and sunglasses.
A light jacket for the ride home after sunset.

Rides are offered by local stables and guides around Aglou, Tamelalt and Mirleft. Quality varies, so choose an operator whose horses look healthy and well cared for, and who provides a guide for every group.
