Legzira Beach Day Trip from Mirleft: Arch, Tides and Sunset

Journal

Legzira's red sandstone arch is 20 minutes from our Mirleft villas. Here's how to plan the perfect day: tides, sunset, where to eat and what to combine it with.

Of all the places to visit near Mirleft, Legzira beach is the one guests talk about most. Red sandstone cliffs, an arch rising out of the sand and a sunset that sets the whole beach on fire. It's only about 20 minutes south of Mirleft by car, which makes it the easiest and most rewarding day trip from Mirleft.

The Legzira arch today

Wind and waves carved two great arches into Legzira's soft cliffs. The larger one collapsed in 2016; the remaining arch still spans the beach and is as photogenic as ever. The rock is fragile and still eroding, so admire it from below, don't climb on it and keep a safe distance from the base of the cliffs.

Time your visit with the tide

This is the most important tip: come on a falling tide. At high tide the sea reaches the cliffs in places and cuts the beach in two. Around low tide you can walk the full length of the sand, pass under the arch and explore the rock pools. Check a tide table the day before and aim to arrive two or three hours before low tide.

Sunset at Legzira

The cliffs face west, so in the late afternoon the low sun turns them deep red. If low tide falls in the late afternoon, you have the perfect day: walk the beach in golden light, then watch the sun drop into the Atlantic. Bring a layer: it cools down quickly once the sun has gone.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: take the coast road south from Mirleft towards Sidi Ifni, about 20 minutes.

  • Parking: park above the beach, then follow the paths and steps down to the sand.

  • Allow: two to three hours on the beach.

  • Food: a few simple cafés and guesthouses near the beach serve tea and tagines; hours vary out of season.

  • Shoes: sandals for the sand, but something with grip for the steps and rocks.

Make a day of it: Legzira and Sidi Ifni

Sidi Ifni, the old Spanish town with its whitewashed Art Deco buildings, is only about 10 km further south. Spend the morning in Ifni's squares and on its clifftop promenade, eat fresh fish at the port, then drive back to Legzira for the low tide and sunset.
