The Atlantic at Mirleft is beautiful, wild and cooler than the Mediterranean. Here's what to know about water temperature, tides and currents before you dive in.
The ocean is the heart of any stay in Mirleft. But the Atlantic here is not the Mediterranean: it's cooler, the tides are large, and the swell can be powerful. With a little knowledge you can enjoy swimming in Mirleft safely all year. Here's our practical guide.
Water temperature through the year
Winter (December–February): around 17–18°C. Refreshing; most swimmers wear a wetsuit.
Spring (March–May): around 18–19°C, warming slowly.
Summer (June–September): around 20–22°C, the most pleasant months for a swim.
Autumn (October–November): still around 20°C early in the season.
The Canary current keeps the water fresh even in midsummer, which is also why the air stays mild when inland Morocco is scorching. If you feel the cold, your villa's private pool is always there.
Understanding the tides
The difference between high and low tide on this coast can be large. At low tide, coves widen, rock pools appear and you can walk between beaches; it's also when some waves break close to rocks. At high tide, the sea can reach the foot of the cliffs and some beaches nearly disappear. Check a tide table every day (any tide app for Mirleft or Sidi Ifni works) and plan walks and swims around it.
Currents and how to stay safe
Rip currents form where waves push water up the beach and it flows back out through a channel. They're most common near rocks, at the ends of beaches and on days with bigger swell.
Swim where other people are swimming, and in calm conditions.
Avoid swimming near rocks, river mouths and alone.
If you are pulled out, don’t fight the current: swim parallel to the beach, then back in.
Watch children at all times; waves can knock over a small child even in shallow water.
Respect any red flag or advice from lifeguards in summer.
The best beaches for swimming
In Mirleft, Aftas is the most sheltered bay and usually the calmest for a swim. Imin Turga, below the town, is also popular in summer. Long open beaches such as Tamelalt are best enjoyed for walks and paddling on big days, and for swimming when the sea is calm. See our guide to Mirleft's beaches for more.
More ways to enjoy the ocean
Learn to surf in a sheltered cove (see our Mirleft surf spots), fish from the rocks with the locals, or simply watch the sunset from your terrace. The ocean here is as much a view as a playground.
Ocean views, private pools
All our villas have a private pool, and many face the sea: DreamCatcher Infinity has an infinity pool above the cliffs, and our Club Evasion villas are about 50 metres from Tamelalt Beach. See the villas and book your dates.
